Borremans & Belgium show strength
July 24, 2010
July 24, 2010 (Phoenix) - Open practice continues at F1 Race Factory, for the 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship. Saturday July 24 marked the first competitive practice scenario, when a number of IKWC drivers got a chance to race in Round 6 of the Arizona Indoor Kart Championship. This was a 1 hour race, with 3 lap qualifying to define the grid, and a standing start. The AZIKC regulars welcomed the foreigners in their series, and the result was a full grid of 26 karts. Eleven of these karts were piloted by drivers currently signed up for the 2010 IKWC.
Chaz Baca Jr. took pole position, making the best out of the 3 laps qualifying session. The local driver and AZIKC regular however, could not sustain the pace during the race, finishing in 8th place. The race was won by Robin Borremans from Belgium, who took the lead from Baca Jr. around lap 8 after an exciting back and forth position exchange. Borremans never looked back and only lost P1 momentarily during the pit-stop sequence. 2008 World Champion Gregory Laporte also from Belgium finished in 2nd place, with 2006 USA Indoor Kart Champion Tony Rolfson in 3rd.
At the end of the race, seven IKWC drivers were in the top 10 positions, the group including 5 foreigners: (P1) Robin Borremans BEL, (P2) Gregory Laporte BEL, (P6) Kenny Geldhof BEL, (P9) Mats de Jong BEL, & (P10) Bradley Philpot GB, and 2 Americans, (P3) Tony Rolfson, and (P7) Jeff Saiani.
The Brazilian drivers started to arrive later on Saturday and are expected to start practicing today. Sunday practice will consist of a halfday of 2 track layout to start, later to be modified to the Big Track. The Big track layout continues on Monday all day, with 2 track layout back on Tuesday heading into the Nations Cup race.
