Brazil takes Nations Cup
August 02, 2009
A record 25 team entries lined up for this years Nations Cup race, the opening event of the 2009 Indoor Kart World Championship in Macae, Brazil. The race was run in front of a crowd of an estimated 1500+ people, which almost completely filled the grandstands, with a full crowd of 2000 expected for the IKWC final next Saturday Aug 8.

Team Brasil-MariMax: Ed Cordeiro, Jose Gabizo, Maxwell Jansley, and Francisco Jansley.

Fabio Konrad from Brazil nearly repeated the Pole Position obained in Kortrijk last year, but had to settle for P2. Pole position was taken by Andre Lima also from Brazil. Just like in Belgium, Konrad had a very quick start and took the early lead already from turn 1. However, a win would elude the team again. The 3 hour endurance event was won by team Brasil-LariMax, formed by Francisco Jansley, Maxwell Jansley, 2006 IKWC Masters Champion Ed Cordeiro, and Jose Gabizo, after starting in 5th place with a strong qualifying performance by Maxwell Jansley.
Second place went to another Brazilian squad, this one composed entirely by drivers competing for the 1st time in the IKWC: team Brazil-Calangos do Cerrado, Carlos Guerra, Diogo Broka, Pedro Inneco, e Jose Sanchez. Team Belgium-Novavie (ex-Talent Promotion) finished a strong 3rd, with Marc Viskens, Robin Borremans, Kristoff Van de Parre, and current Indoor Kart World Champion (heavy) Mathias Grooten taking home the Bronze trophy. Team USA - Victory Lane Indoor Karting Center impressed, coming from 24th starting position to finsh in 4th place, with drivers Cody Robnett, Dan Burke, Jordan Pembleton, and Danilo Iglesias.
The 2008 Champion team, Hong Kong BlueStar, was unfortunately disqualified for an infraction still in the early laps, while 2008 Indoor Kart World Champion (Light) Gregory Laporte was behind the wheel, finishing in a distant and disappointing 24th place.

A noisy and cheerfull crowd of kart racing fans filled almost to capacity the 2000 seat grandstands that stretched along the entire front straight and gave an excellent unobstructed view of the entire track.
