IKWC 2009 Day 1 News!
August 06, 2009
First Day of Racing at the 2009 IKWC began with Race 1 for the IKWC-50 class. The new class, which was added this year, features drivers who weigh less than 50kg. The class equals drivers at 50kg, but in the same karts used by the IKWC-Top class.
IKWC-50's Race 1 was run in counter-clockwise direction, and dominated by 11 year old Brazilian driver Otavio Porto, who took the Pole Position with a lap time of 50:75, just 00:02 ahead of Andre Lima in 2nd. Porto dominated the race from start to finish with a flawless performance. Second place went to Matheus Trigo, and third was Guilherme Kaiuca.
Since the IKWC-50 drivers carry 40kg (89lbs) less than the IKWC-Top class, they can potentially set faster laps than the Top class, and they did. The young drivers were flying, with Race 1 winner Otavio Porto scoring the fastest lap of the race with a 49:77 lap. Nine drivers in the IKWC-50 class were able to break into the 49 second braket on day one.
For the drivers in the IKWC-Top class, it was "Pole Day". The 6 race groups took to the track for a 10 minute qualifying session to set the grids for the first set of races to be run tomorrow. Each group was composed of 18 to 19 drivers. Although there is a high number of very fast and experienced drivers who are racing for the first time at the IKWC in Macae, all Poles scored on Pole Day were conquered by drivers who have already competed in past IKWCs further confirming the high level of the drivers that currently race in the World Championship.
The Belgians showed that although vastly outnumbered by Brazilians, there are a force to be reckoned, taking 3 of the 6 Pole Positions today. The Brazilians confirmed that they will be hard to beat, taking 2, and USA impressed taking 1.
Pole for Race 1 was taken by 23 year old Belgian driver Robin Borremans (Team Belgium Novavie), current Belgian Indoor Champion (Heavy), with a lap time of 50:14.
Pole for Race 2 was taken by 16 year old Brazilian driver Lucas Motta (Team Top Kart Indoor Center), current Brazilian Indoor Kart Champion, with a lap of 50:64.
Pole for Race 3 was taken by 16 year old Belgian driver Kenny Geldoff (Team CORTEX BlueStar A), with a lap time of 50:19.
Pole for Race 4 was taken by 34 year old USA driver Dan Burke (Team USA - Victory Lane Indoor Karting Center - North Carolina), with a lap time of 50:83.
Pole for Race 5 was taken by 25 year old Belgian driver Gregory Laporte (Team CORTEX BlueStar A), and current Indoor Kart World Champion (Light), with a lap time of 50:56.
Pole for Race 6 was taken by 31 year old Brazilian driver Humberto Rubin (Team Point Kart Indoor Center A), with a lap time of 50:39.
Fastest lap of IKWC Top Pole Day went to Robin Borremans from Belgium.
Racing continues Aug 5, with Race 2 for the IKWC-50 class, as well as Races 1 & 2 for the 6 groups of the IKWC Top class. It will be a marathon racing day of 13 thirty minute races, scheduled to start at 10am local Rio time with the running of the IKWC-50 Race 2, and continuing throughout the day and night until the schedule is complete.

Otavio Porto from Brazil took the victory on the first ever IKWC-50 race, while current Belgian Indoor Kart Champion (Heavy) Robin Borremans had the fastest lap time for the day for the IKWC-Top class.
