July 27, 2010 (Phoenix) - The 2010 edition of the Indoor Kart World Championship officially got underway on Tuesday night (July 27), with the traditional 3hr Nations Cup endurance race taking place on the Full GP track layout at the F1 Race Factory facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

As expected, the battle for top honors in the opening race of the IKWC featured plenty of side-by-side racing. With many of the top indoor karters from around the world joining forces via the 11 teams entered, it was anyone's guess who would emerge with top honors when the checkered flag waved.

The race could not feature the traditional LeMans style start due to the seat belts used at the Phoenix track which can be quite tricky to latch when put in a hurry. An F1 style standing start was used as an alternative. The driver switch was also changed this year, with the replacement driver waiting to go off in a new kart, ensuring each team would drive at least 4 different karts during the race.

Team Belgium Bluestar, consisting of 2008 World Champion Gregory Laporte, Kenny Geldhof, Mats de Jong and Robin Borremans, in the end scored the win, completing a total of 450 laps. Team USA/Colombia SoCal (Dave Messimer, Diego Morales, Logan Calvin and Miles Calvin) however kept the pressure up all the way to the checkered flag, eventually taking home second place, only a few kart lengths behind the winners. Giving the host country some momentum heading into the individual IKWC races, Team USA NorCal Umigo Indoor Karting (Jerot King, Jon Kimbrell, T.A La and Zach Becker) joined in the podium celebrations, finishing third, one lap back. Completing the top-five in 2010 Nations Cup were Team USA DeCuzzi Tires/Finishline (Aaron Downs, Jeff Saiani, Tony Rolfson and Truman Godfrey), who set the fastest race lap (23.220), and Team Great Britain/Colombia (Andres Prieto, Bradley Philpot, Juan Monroy and Michael Johnson).

The 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship continues on Wednesday (July 28), with races one and two at F1 Race Factory in Phoenix, Arizona.
