IKWC 2010 - Day 1: Grooten leads with 2 wins!

July 28, 2010 (Phoenix) - The chase for the 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship title officially commenced on Wednesday (July 28) at the renowned F1 Race Factory indoor facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

Broken into four groups, the entire large and talented IKWC field each raced two 30 minute races on day one in Arizona.

First up was Race 1A. As would be the case for each race, a three-lap qualifying run was contested to set the field for the 60-lap race. Belgium's Kenny Geldhof was the early driver to beat in qualifying, securing the pole for race one via a fast lap of 29.941 over Jamaica's Ian Pierce (29.967) and reigning World Champion Maxwell Jansley (29.991) from Brazil. Come race time, it was American Mike Davila who was the driver to watch. Advancing from 11th on the grid, the Apex Racing star captured a narrow win over Geldhof, setting the fastest lap of the race (29.114) in the process. American Logan Calvin, via the Dromo 1 facility, completed the top-three, leading Pierce and Jansley to the stripe. However after the race Davila was penalized for pitting too early (on lap 1, which is against the rules), giving Geldhof the win over Calvin, Pierce, Davilla and Jansley.

Brazil's Carlos Nadaes led the Race 1B karters to the green flag in their opening race, having edged Netherlands Ruben Boutens and American Miles Calvin for the pole position via a fast lap of 29.538 in qualifying. While all three drivers remained among the top-three in the race, the order was shuffled, as Calvin emerged with the win over Boutens and Nadaes. Completing the top-five were Colombia's Andres Prieto and Belgium's Gregory Laporte, the 2008 World Champion (Light).

Ed Cordeiro from Brazil was the quickest racer in Race 1C qualifying (29.204), beating the Belgian duo of Matthias Grooten, the 2008 World Champion (Heavy), and Robin Borremans. As expected the order changed throughout the 60-lap race, with Grooten taking the checkered flag first, in front of Cordeiro and American Jon Kimbrell, the reigning U.S. National Champion from Dromo 1. One lap back, Brazil's Felipe Assumpcao and Borremans finished fourth and fifth.

The final group to take to the track, Race 1D qualifying featured a strong showing by American Aaron Downs, as he captured the pole position (29.309) over Belgium's Mats De Jong and USA's Chaz Baca Jr. The order up front remained the same come race time, as the Dromo 1 racer scored the win over De Jong and local F1 Race Factory standout Baca Jr. Colombian Juan Monroy and Netherlands Rene Wegman earned valuable points via fourth and fifth place results.

With the groups further shuffled, ensuring all drivers race one another, Race 2A was next on-course. England's Bradley Philpot started P1 after leading Downs and Laporte in qualifying via a fast time of 29.503. That also proved to be the order after the completion of the 60-lap affair. Behind the trio, Nadaes and Brazil's Francisco Jansley completed the top-five.

Given their performances in the opening races, it came as no surprise that Grooten captured the Race 2B pole (29.391) over Logan Calvin and Maxwell Jansley. After what was an entertaining race, Grooten emerged with his second victory of the day, leading Calvin and fellow American Jeff Saiani to the stripe. Following the Dromo 1 racer to the checkered flag was Jansley and Brazil's Beto Rossi.

With valuable points up for grabs, Borremans was the early racer to watch in Race 2C, earning the pole position (29.238) over Kimbrell and former US National Champion Truman Godfrey. In the end, the polesitter was able to score the win, just ahead of the F1 Race Factory duo of Godfrey and Tony Rolfson. Making it four Americans in the top-five, Kimbrell and Miles Calvin were next to the stripe.

The final race of the day featured Colombian Juan Monroy (29.362) leading De Jong, Baca Jr., and the rest of the Race 2D field to the green flag. Monroy was able to hold off the advances of De Jong to score the win, while American Brandon Lax completed the top-three, ahead of Baca Jr. and Austrian Florian Holzinger.

With the completion of day one, Matthias Grooten unofficially leads the points chase for the world title, followed by Aaron Downs, Juan Monroy, Mats De Jong and Logan Calvin.

The 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship resumes on Thursday (July 29), with races three and four for the four groups at F1 Race Factory in Phoenix, Arizona.
