July 30, 2010 (Phoenix) - The top indoor karters from around the world returned to F1 Race Factory in Phoenix, Ariz., on Friday (July 30) for day three of the 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship.
With another full day of on-track action for the large and talented field, everyone was expecting some hard fought and entertaining races...and that s exactly what they got.
The grid for Race 5A featured American Aaron Downs lining up P1, thanks to the fast lap (229.967) in three-lap qualifying. The Dromo 1 star racing for Team DeCuzzi / FinishLine Race Gear promptly made the most of his starting position, capturing his second win of the event, ahead of P2 starter Tanja-Carina Muller from Germany, and current points leader Matthias Grooten from Belgium, who advanced from 10th on the grid after switching karts in qualifying. American Kyler Repella, having started third, fell to eighth in the race.
The host nation's strong day three showing continued in Race 5B. Current U.S. National Champion Jon Kimbrell started from the pole (29.517) and held the same P1 position when the checkered flag waved, scoring his second consecutive IKWC race win. The Netherlands' Ruben Boutens found a way past 2009 Junior World Champion Andre Lima to finish second ahead of the Brazilian in the 60-lap race.
The run of polesitters converting their starting position into wins continued in Race 5C, as Belgium's Mats De Jong (29.184 pole time) held station at the front of the field when checkered flag waved. Behind the race winner, the field shuffled however, as Brazil's Felipe Assumpcao worked his way forward from fifth on the grid to finish second. Logan Calvin, having line-up fourth after tying Austria's Herwig Heckl with the third quickest time in qualifying, completed the top-three. American Tony Rolfson went the opposite way in the race, falling from second at the start to fifth at the finish.
Race 5D featured a fun race to watch, as a trio of racers battled for the win. While Belgium's Robin Borremans started P1 (29.182), he was unable to hold off the advances of his country Kenny Geldhof in the race, who earned his third win of 2010. Just behind the duo, reigning World Champion Maxwell Jansley from Brazil finished the race where he started, in third.
Ensuring he would end day three at the top of the charts, Grooten returned to his winning ways in Race 6A. The 2008 Heavy World Champion converted the pole (24.060) into a fifth win in six races, leading second place starter Herkl of Austria and fourth place starter Jeff Saiani of the USA, who is keeping very busy scoring and reporting for IKN, to the checkered flag. American Miles Calvin, having started third, fell one place to to fourth at the stripe. Grooten who started the 2010 IKWC as the winningest driver in the history of the event has extended his record with his 2010 performances, and is getting the reputation of being the Michael Schumacher of the IKWC.
Race 6B featured another racer adding to his victory tally. De Jong kept his title chase very much alive, converting another pole position (23.658) into a second win on the day. Boutens, having started fourth, worked his way forward in the 72-lap affair, eventually finishing second ahead of 2005 World Champion Werner Truegler of Austria. Fellow former World Champion Gregory Laporte fell from second to fourth at the waving of the checkered flag.
In what was an unlikely uneventful affair, the top-three remained unchanged in Race 6C, except for the position shuffle during the pit-stop sequence. Jansley starting from the pole (23.607), was still P1 when the checkered flag fell, with Geldhof and Colombia's Andres Prieto holding station behind in second and third.
The final race of the day (Race 6D) featured a repeat of the opening affair. Downs started P1 (23.429) and never looked back, winning for the second time on Friday. David Messimer made it an American one-two at the stripe, working his way past Fredi Fuchs for second, with the Austrian completing the top-three.
Entering the final day of group competition at the 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship, Matthias Grooten continues to unofficially top the points charts, ahead of Belgian teammates Mats De Jong and Kenny Geldhof. Aaron Downs is now the top American, in fourth, leading Ruben Boutens.
Day four (Saturday, July 31) of the 2010 Indoor Kart World Championship will feature the field broken into three larger groups, each taking part in a one-hour race at F1 Race Factory in Phoenix, Arizona.
